Teaching the Core Standards

In 1.5, 3.0 or 4.5 continuing education units

Course Description:

Excellence in teaching starts with an understanding of the seven best practice structures and using them to teach dynamic, engaging lessons and formulative-reflective assessments to improve student learning. The interventions taught in this class are founded on the latest scientific research and national common core standards. Educators will design plans and strategies to help their students exceed these standards in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies by implementing collaborative activities, strategic thinking skills, classroom workshops and the gradual release of responsibility to students for their own academic achievements. Teachers will also discover how to apply these techniques when teaching the standards to struggling readers, English language learners and students in special education. Integrating technology and the arts will also be a focus in this course to help make learning exciting and motivating for the students in your classroom.

 Goals and Objectives:

As a result of this participation in this course, students should:

1. Learn the seven best practice structures and how to incorporate them into lesson plans and assessments that will increase student achievement.

2. Differentiate curriculum and lessons while using flexible learning techniques to meet the needs of all students, including students in special education and English language learners.

3. Teach students how to assess their achievements and take responsibility for their learning goals by setting goals and maintaining their own records.

4. Discover how to apply and extend the core standards in the writing, reading, science, social studies and math curriculums so that students can actively experience the targeted concepts and apply their knowledge in the classroom. Texts/Readings
